Expressiveness modulo Bisimilarity of Regular Expressions with Parallel Composition (Extended Abstract)
The languages accepted by finite automata are precisely the languages denoted
by regular expressions. In contrast, finite automata may exhibit behaviours
that cannot be described by regular expressions up to bisimilarity. In this
paper, we consider extensions of the theory of regular expressions with various
forms of parallel composition and study the effect on expressiveness. First we
prove that adding pure interleaving to the theory of regular expressions
strictly increases its expressiveness up to bisimilarity. Then, we prove that
replacing the operation for pure interleaving by ACP-style parallel composition
gives a further increase in expressiveness. Finally, we prove that the theory
of regular expressions with ACP-style parallel composition and encapsulation is
expressive enough to express all finite automata up to bisimilarity. Our
results extend the expressiveness results obtained by Bergstra, Bethke and
Ponse for process algebras with (the binary variant of) Kleene's star
operation.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS'10, arXiv:1011.601
Boron Abundances in Main Sequence B-type Stars: A Test of Rotational Depletion during Main Sequence Evolution
Boron abundances have been derived for seven main sequence B-type stars from
HST STIS spectra around the B III 2066 A line. In two stars, boron appears to
be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star,
boron is detectable but it is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron
is undetectable implying depletions of 1 to 2 dex. Three of these four stars
are nitrogen enriched, but the fourth shows no enrichment of nitrogen. Only
rotationally induced mixing predicts that boron depletions are unaccompanied by
nitrogen enrichments. The inferred rate of boron depletion from our
observations is in good agreement with these predictions. Other boron-depleted
nitrogen-normal stars are identified from the literature. Also, several
boron-depleted nitrogen-rich stars are identified, and while all fall on the
boron-nitrogen trend predicted by rotationally-induced mixing, a majority have
nitrogen enrichments that are not uniquely explained by rotation.
The spectra have also been used to determine iron-group (Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni)
abundances. The seven B-type stars have near solar iron-group abundances, as
expected for young stars in the solar neighborhood. We have also analysed the
halo B-type star, PG0832+676. We find [Fe/H] = -0.88 +/- 0.10, and the absence
of the B III line gives the upper limit [B/H]<2.5. These and other published
abundances are used to infer the star's evolutionary status as a post-AGB star.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures. accepted to Ap
Can the PROPER intervention reduce psychotropic drug prescription in nursing home residents with dementia?:Results of a cluster-randomized controlled trial
Objectives:To evaluate the effect of the PROPER intervention in nursing home residents with dementia on the prevalence of psychotropic drug use and neuropsychiatric symptoms.Design:A cluster-randomized controlled design with two parallel groups (intervention versus usual care) and assessments at 0, 6, 12, and 18 months.Setting:Thirty-one dementia special care units within 13 long-term care organizations in the Netherlands.Participants:Three hundred eighty nursing home residents with dementiaIntervention:The PROPER intervention consisted of a structured and repeated multidisciplinary medication review, supported by education and continuous evaluation.Measurements:Prescriptions of antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, and hypnotics, and occurrence of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Results:The prescription of any type of psychotropic drugs increased in the intervention group, and decreased in the control group, with an estimated difference of 3.9 percentage points per 6 months (p = 0.01). Effects for the individual drug groups were minor (differences of 1.6 percentage points and below per 6 months) and not statistically significant. The occurrence of neuropsychiatric symptoms remained stable in both the intervention and control groups during the follow-up of 18 months. Conclusions:The PROPER intervention failed to demonstrate effectiveness in reducing the prevalence of psychotropic drugs. It may be interesting to enrich the intervention with components that address personal attitudes and communication between nursing home professionals, not only with respect to the prescription of psychotropic drugs, but also to neuropsychiatric symptoms
The Projected Rotational Velocity Distribution of a Sample of OB stars from a Calibration based on Synthetic He I lines
We derive projected rotational velocities (vsini) for a sample of 156
Galactic OB star members of 35 clusters, HII regions, and associations. The HeI
lines at 4026, 4388, and 4471A were analyzed in order to define
a calibration of the synthetic HeI full-widths at half maximum versus stellar
vsini. A grid of synthetic spectra of HeI line profiles was calculated in
non-LTE using an extensive helium model atom and updated atomic data. The
vsini's for all stars were derived using the He I FWHM calibrations but also,
for those target stars with relatively sharp lines, vsini values were obtained
from best fit synthetic spectra of up to 40 lines of CII, NII, OII, AlIII,
MgII, SiIII, and SIII. This calibration is a useful and efficient tool for
estimating the projected rotational velocities of O9-B5 main-sequence stars.
The distribution of vsini for an unbiased sample of early B stars in the
unbound association Cep OB2 is consistent with the distribution reported
elsewhere for other unbound associations.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa
Effective low-dose sirolimus regimen for kaposiform haemangioendothelioma with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon in young infants
Aims Management of kaposiform haemangioendotheliomas (KHE) with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon is challenging in young infants who are subjected to developmental pharmacokinetic changes. Sirolimus, sometimes combined with corticosteroids, can be used as an effective treatment of KHE. Simultaneously, toxicities such as interstitial pneumonitis related to the use of sirolimus may be fatal. As infants have a very low CYP3-enzyme expression at birth, which rises during ageing, we hypothesize that a reduced metabolization of sirolimus might lead to high sirolimus serum levels and low dose may be sufficient without the side effects. Methods A case series of 5 infants with kaposiform haemangioendothelioma with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon was analysed retrospectively. All infants were treated with sirolimus 0.2 mg/m(2) every 24 or 48 hours according to their age. Prednisone was added to the therapy for additional effect in 4 patients. Results In all patients, low dose of sirolimus led to therapeutic sirolimus levels (4-6 ng/mL). All infants (aged 4 days-7 months) had a complete haematological response, without serious adverse events. In all patients, the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon resolved, the coagulation profile normalized and tumour size reduction was seen. Conclusion Low-dose sirolimus treatment is safe for infants with kaposiform haemangioendothelioma and Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. It is essential to realize that during the first months of life, metabolism is still developing and enzymes necessary to metabolise drugs like sirolimus still have to mature. To avoid toxic levels, the sirolimus dosage should be based on age and the associated pharmacological developments
Improving psychotropic drug prescription in nursing home patients with dementia:design of a cluster randomized controlled trial
Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are highly prevalent in nursing home patients with dementia. Despite modest effectiveness and considerable side effects, psychotropic drugs are frequently prescribed for these neuropsychiatric symptoms. This raises questions whether psychotropic drugs are appropriately prescribed. The aim of the PROPER (PRescription Optimization of Psychotropic drugs in Elderly nuRsing home patients with dementia) II study is to investigate the efficacy of an intervention for improving the appropriateness of psychotropic drug prescription in nursing home patients with dementia.Methods/design: The PROPER II study is a multi-center cluster randomized controlled, pragmatic trial using parallel groups. It has a duration of eighteen months and four six-monthly assessments. Six nursing homes will participate in the intervention and six will continue care as usual. The nursing homes will be located throughout the Netherlands, each participating with two dementia special care units with an average of fifteen patients per unit, resulting in 360 patients. The intervention consists of a structured and repeated multidisciplinary medication review supported by education and continuous evaluation. It is conducted by pharmacists, physicians, and nurses and consists of three components: 1) preparation and education, 2) conduct, and 3) evaluation/guidance. The primary outcome is the proportion of patients with appropriate psychotropic drug use. Secondary outcomes are the overall frequency of psychotropic drug use, neuropsychiatric symptoms, quality of life, activities of daily living, psychotropic drug side effects and adverse events (including cognition, comorbidity, and mortality). Besides, a process analysis on the intervention will be carried out.Discussion: This study is expected to improve the appropriateness of psychotropic drug prescription for neuropsychiatric symptoms in nursing home patients with dementia by introducing a structured and repeated multidisciplinary medication review supported by education and continuous evaluation.</p
UBVI and Ha Photometry of the h & chi Persei cluster
UBVI and Ha photometry is presented for 17319 stars in vicinity of the young
double cluster h & chi Persei. Our photometry extends over a 37arcmin x 1arcdeg
field centered on the association. We construct reddening contours within the
imaged field. We find that the two clusters share a common distance modulus of
11.750.05 and ages of log age(yr) = 7.10.1. From the V-Ha colour, a
measure of the Ha emission strength, we conduct a survey for emission line
objects within the association. We detect a sample of 33 Be stars, 8 of which
are new detections. We present a scenario of evolutionary enhancement of the Be
phenomenon to account for the peak in Be fraction towards the top of the
main-sequence in the population of h & chi Persei and similar young clusters.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, AJ Jul
Spectroscopic determination of the fundamental parameters of 66 B-type stars in the field-of-view of the CoRoT satellite
We aim to determine the fundamental parameters of a sample of B stars with
apparent visual magnitudes below 8 in the field-of-view of the CoRoT space
mission, from high-resolution spectroscopy. We developed an automatic procedure
for the spectroscopic analysis of B-type stars with winds, based on an
extensive grid of FASTWIND model atmospheres. We use the equivalent widths
and/or the line profile shapes of continuum normalized hydrogen, helium and
silicon line profiles to determine the fundamental properties of these stars in
an automated way. After thorough tests, both on synthetic datasets and on very
high-quality, high-resolution spectra of B stars for which we already had
accurate values of their physical properties from alternative analyses, we
applied our method to 66 B-type stars contained in the ground-based archive of
the CoRoT space mission. We discuss the statistical properties of the sample
and compare them with those predicted by evolutionary models of B stars. Our
spectroscopic results provide a valuable starting point for any future seismic
modelling of the stars, should they be observed by CoRoT.Comment: 31 pages (including 14 pages online material), 32 figure
